Engineering the Future of Sight

At BIENCO, our groundbreaking products are set to revolutionise eye care, providing innovative solutions that enhance and restore vision for a brighter tomorrow.

Our products will help millions of patients both nationally and globally to restore vision, improving their quality of life and reducing the social and economic burden associated with blindness. Replacing donor tissue with bioengineered tissue will transform how treatment is delivered in clinics, creating a new industry and underpin basic science in the field of tissue engineering.

Our Products

BIENCO-PK

Full thickness
3-layer bioengineered cornea implant

(Penetrating Keratoplasty), a bioengineered tissue designed to repair the whole cornea. This flagship product will provide surgeons with the ability to repair all layers of the cornea and especially those where the central stromal region has become dysfunctional owing to disease (e.g. keratoconus and various stromal dystrophies) and/or scarring (e.g. trachoma).

BIENCO-EK

Partial thickness
2-layer bioengineered Corneal implant

(Endothelial Keratoplasty), a bioengineered tissue designed to replace the corneal endothelium. This streamlined design consisting of corneal endothelial attached to a support membrane, will be used to restore transparency of the cornea in those patients afflicted with conditions such as Fuch’s dystrophy and bullous keratopathy where only the endothelium requires replacement.

Hygelix

SYNTHETIC BIODEGRADABLE SCAFFOLD CARRIER MEMBRANE OF ENDOTHELIAL CELLS

Hygelix is a biodegradable hydrogel which will aid corneal endothelial grafting. The Hygelix graft and the methodology developed for surgical implantation will increase the adoption of Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) by Ophthalmological surgeons, reducing the technical difficulty, surgery times, and improving patient outcomes. There will also be economic benefits to both government and private insurers since our technology will drastically reduce healthcare costs by preventing graft failure and regrafting as well as reducing theatre time. In response, we have been developing a material-based product.

Collagen

Human Collagen –
Collagen IV & Collagen I

BIENCO is positioned to expand and upscale production of Optical Grade Human Collagen to establish a continuous supply of collagen I and IV for the next 5 years. Most collagen used in the health sector is animal-sourced and does not exhibit the optical clarity that human collagen offers. This will be the first in Australia and will bring enormous research and commercial potential in other bioengineering fields and human tissue constructs. While our primary focus is to provide collagen for corneal bioengineering, the collagen is in itself a standalone product with research markets in type I and type IV collagen as it is the ideal biomaterial for the natural structural protein in the native cornea.
