Why Eye Donations Matter

Corneal blindness is the fifth leading cause of blindness globally, and the only treatment available is a corneal transplant. However, worldwide, donor corneas are available for only 1 in 70 patients (Gain et al., 2016), with 53% of the world’s population unable to directly access the required tissue. This stark disparity highlights the urgent need for more eye donations.

Corneal transplantation relies on human donor corneal tissue, generously donated from deceased individuals with the consent of their families. The success of this program will lead to better health outcomes for millions of patients, both nationally and globally. By restoring vision, improving quality of life, and reducing the social and economic burden associated with blindness, eye donations play a critical role in transforming lives.
